Surah Al-Hijr With English Translations

الٓرٰ-  -تِلْكَ اٰیٰتُ الْكِتٰبِ وَ قُرْاٰنٍ مُّبِیْنٍ(1)

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an. (1)

رُبَمَا یَوَدُّ الَّذِیْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَوْ كَانُوْا مُسْلِمِیْنَ(2)

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. (2)

ذَرْهُمْ یَاْكُلُوْا وَ یَتَمَتَّعُوْا وَ یُلْهِهِمُ الْاَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ یَعْلَمُوْنَ(3)

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they will soon know. (3)

وَ مَاۤ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْیَةٍ اِلَّا وَ لَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُوْمٌ(4)

And We did not destroy any city except that for it was a known decree. (4)

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ اُمَّةٍ اَجَلَهَا وَ مَا یَسْتَاْخِرُوْنَ(5)

No nation can precede its term, nor can they postpone it. (5)

وَ قَالُوْا یٰۤاَیُّهَا الَّذِیْ نُزِّلَ عَلَیْهِ الذِّكْرُ اِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُوْنٌﭤ(6)

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad." (6)

لَوْ مَا تَاْتِیْنَا بِالْمَلٰٓىٕكَةِ اِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِیْنَ(7)

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be of the truthful? (7)

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلٰٓىٕكَةَ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَ مَا كَانُـوْۤا اِذًا مُّنْظَرِیْنَ(8)

We do not send down the angels except with truth, and then they would not be reprieved. (8)

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَ اِنَّا لَهٗ لَحٰفِظُوْنَ(9)

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an, and indeed, We will be its guardian. (9)

وَ لَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِیْ شِیَعِ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ(10)

And We had already sent [messengers] before you among the sects of the former peoples. (10)

وَ مَا یَاْتِیْهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا كَانُوْا بِهٖ یَسْتَهْزِءُوْنَ(11)

And there did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him. (11)

كَذٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهٗ فِیْ قُلُوْبِ الْمُجْرِمِیْنَ(12)

Thus We insert it into the hearts of the criminals. (12)

لَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِهٖ وَ قَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ(13)

They will not believe in it, and already the example of the former peoples has passed. (13)

وَ لَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَیْهِمْ بَابًا مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوْا فِیْهِ یَعْرُجُوْنَ(14)

And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, (14)

لَقَالُـوْۤا اِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ اَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُوْرُوْنَ(15)

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled; rather, we are a people bewitched." (15)

وَ لَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِی السَّمَآءِ بُرُوْجًا وَّ زَیَّنّٰهَا لِلنّٰظِرِیْنَ(16)

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers. (16)

وَ حَفِظْنٰهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَیْطٰنٍ رَّجِیْمٍ(17)

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [by stoning] (17)

اِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَاَتْبَعَهٗ شِهَابٌ مُّبِیْنٌ(18)

Except one who steals a hearing, and he is pursued by a clear burning flame. (18)

وَ الْاَرْضَ مَدَدْنٰهَا وَ اَلْقَیْنَا فِیْهَا رَوَاسِیَ وَ اَنْۢبَتْنَا فِیْهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَیْءٍ مَّوْزُوْنٍ(19)

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. (19)

وَ جَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِیْهَا مَعَایِشَ وَ مَنْ لَّسْتُمْ لَهٗ بِرٰزِقِیْنَ(20)

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those whom you do not provide [i.e., your dependents]. (20)

وَ اِنْ مِّنْ شَیْءٍ اِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَآىٕنُهٗ٘-وَ مَا نُنَزِّلُهٗۤ اِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍ(21)

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure. (21)

وَ اَرْسَلْنَا الرِّیٰحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَاَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَاَسْقَیْنٰكُمُوْهُۚ-وَ مَاۤ اَنْتُمْ لَهٗ بِخٰزِنِیْنَ(22)

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it, and you are not its retainers. (22)

وَ اِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْیٖ وَ نُمِیْتُ وَ نَحْنُ الْوٰرِثُوْنَ(23)

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the inheritors. (23)

وَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِیْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَاْخِرِیْنَ(24)

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones]. (24)

وَ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ یَحْشُرُهُمْؕ-اِنَّهٗ حَكِیْمٌ عَلِیْمٌ(25)

And indeed, it is your Lord who will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing. (25)

وَ لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ(26)

And We did certainly create man out of clay from black mud altered [in composition]. (26)

وَ الْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنٰهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَّارِ السَّمُوْمِ(27)

And the jinn We created before out of the fire of a scorching wind. (27)

وَ اِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلٰٓىٕكَةِ اِنِّیْ خَالِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ(28)

And [mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being out of clay from black mud altered [in composition]. (28)

فَاِذَا سَوَّیْتُهٗ وَ نَفَخْتُ فِیْهِ مِنْ رُّوْحِیْ فَقَعُوْا لَهٗ سٰجِدِیْنَ(29)

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." (29)

فَسَجَدَ الْمَلٰٓىٕكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ اَجْمَعُوْنَ(30)

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely, (30)

اِلَّاۤ اِبْلِیْسَؕ-اَبٰۤى اَنْ یَّكُوْنَ مَعَ السّٰجِدِیْنَ(31)

Except Iblees, who refused to be among those who prostrated. (31)

قَالَ یٰۤـاِبْلِیْسُ مَا لَكَ اَلَّا تَكُوْنَ مَعَ السّٰجِدِیْنَ(32)

[Allah] said, "O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not among those who prostrate?" (32)

قَالَ لَمْ اَكُنْ لِّاَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهٗ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ(33)

He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from black mud altered [in composition]." (33)

قَالَ فَاخْرُ جْ مِنْهَا فَاِنَّكَ رَجِیْمٌ(34)

[Allah] said, "Then get out of Paradise, for indeed, you are expelled. (34)

وَّ اِنَّ عَلَیْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ اِلٰى یَوْمِ الدِّیْنِ(35)

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense." (35)

قَالَ رَبِّ فَاَنْظِرْنِیْۤ اِلٰى یَوْمِ یُبْعَثُوْنَ(36)

He said, "My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected." (36)

قَالَ فَاِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِیْنَ(37)

[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those given respite (37)

اِلٰى یَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُوْمِ(38)

Until the Day of the appointed time." (38)

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ اَغْوَیْتَنِیْ لَاُزَیِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِی الْاَرْضِ وَ لَاُغْوِیَنَّهُمْ اَجْمَعِیْنَ(39)

He said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all (39)

اِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِیْنَ(40)

Except, among them, Your chosen servants." (40)

قَالَ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَیَّ مُسْتَقِیْمٌ(41)

[Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me that is straight. (41)

اِنَّ عِبَادِیْ لَیْسَ لَكَ عَلَیْهِمْ سُلْطٰنٌ اِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغٰوِیْنَ(42)

Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except whoever follows you of those who are astray. (42)

وَ اِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ اَجْمَعِیْنَ(43)

And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all. (43)

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ اَبْوَابٍؕ-لِكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُوْمٌ(44)

It has seven gates; for each gate is of them a portion designated." (44)

اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ فِیْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّ عُیُوْنٍﭤ(45)

Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs. (45)

اُدْخُلُوْهَا بِسَلٰمٍ اٰمِنِیْنَ(46)

[They will be told], "Enter it in peace, secure." (46)

وَ نَزَعْنَا مَا فِیْ صُدُوْرِهِمْ مِّنْ غِلٍّ اِخْوَانًا عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِیْنَ(47)

And We will remove whatever of resentment is in their breasts; [they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other. (47)

لَا یَمَسُّهُمْ فِیْهَا نَصَبٌ وَّ مَا هُمْ مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِیْنَ(48)

No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed. (48)

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِیْۤ اَنِّیْۤ اَنَا الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِیْمُ(49)

Inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful, (49)

وَ اَنَّ عَذَابِیْ هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْاَلِیْمُ(50)

And that My punishment is the painful punishment. (50)

وَ نَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَیْفِ اِبْرٰهِیْمَﭥ(51)

And inform them about the guests of Abraham, (51)

اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلَیْهِ فَقَالُوْا سَلٰمًاؕ-قَالَ اِنَّا مِنْكُمْ وَ جِلُوْنَ(52)

When they entered upon him and said, "[We give] peace." He said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you." (52)

قَالُوْا لَا تَوْجَلْ اِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلٰمٍ عَلِیْمٍ(53)

They said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy." (53)

قَالَ اَبَشَّرْتُمُوْنِیْ عَلٰۤى اَنْ مَّسَّنِیَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُوْنَ(54)

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you give tidings?" (54)

قَالُوْا بَشَّرْنٰكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُنْ مِّنَ الْقٰنِطِیْنَ(55)

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing." (55)

قَالَ وَ مَنْ یَّقْنَطُ مِنْ رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهٖۤ اِلَّا الضَّآلُّوْنَ(56)

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?" (56)

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ اَیُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُوْنَ(57)

He said, "Then what is your business, O messengers?" (57)

قَالُـوْۤا اِنَّـاۤ اُرْسِلْنَاۤ اِلٰى قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِیْنَ(58)

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals, (58)

اِلَّاۤ اٰلَ لُوْطٍؕ-اِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوْهُمْ اَجْمَعِیْنَ(59)

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all (59)

اِلَّا امْرَاَتَهٗ قَدَّرْنَاۤۙ-اِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغٰبِرِیْنَ(60)

Except his wife; We destined that she would be of those who remain behind. (60)

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ اٰلَ لُوْطِ ﹰالْمُرْسَلُوْنَ (61)

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot, (61)

قَالَ اِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنْكَرُوْنَ(62)

[Lot] said, "Indeed, you are people unknown." (62)

قَالُوْا بَلْ جِئْنٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوْا فِیْهِ یَمْتَرُوْنَ(63)

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were in doubt. (63)

وَ اَتَیْنٰكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَ اِنَّا لَصٰدِقُوْنَ(64)

And we have come to you with the truth, and indeed, we are truthful. (64)

فَاَسْرِ بِاَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ الَّیْلِ وَ اتَّبِـعْ اَدْبَارَهُمْ وَ لَا یَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ اَحَدٌ وَّ امْضُوْا حَیْثُ تُؤْمَرُوْنَ(65)

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them, and let not anyone among you look back, and proceed to where you are commanded." (65)

وَ قَضَیْنَاۤ اِلَیْهِ ذٰلِكَ الْاَمْرَ اَنَّ دَابِرَ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوْعٌ مُّصْبِحِیْنَ(66)

And We conveyed to him that decree: that the root of those [people] would be cut off by morning. (66)

وَ جَآءَ اَهْلُ الْمَدِیْنَةِ یَسْتَبْشِرُوْنَ(67)

And the people of the city came rejoicing. (67)

قَالَ اِنَّ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ ضَیْفِیْ فَلَا تَفْضَحُوْنِ(68)

He said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not disgrace me. (68)

وَ اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَ لَا تُخْزُوْنِ(69)

And fear Allah and do not humiliate me." (69)

قَالُـوْۤا اَوَ لَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ(70)

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] anyone?" (70)

قَالَ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ بَنٰتِیْۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ فٰعِلِیْنَﭤ(71)

He said, "These are my daughters, if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]." (71)

لَعَمْرُكَ اِنَّهُمْ لَفِیْ سَكْرَتِهِمْ یَعْمَهُوْنَ(72)

By your life, indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly. (72)

فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّیْحَةُ مُشْرِقِیْنَ(73)

So the shriek overtook them at sunrise. (73)

فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِیَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَ اَمْطَرْنَا عَلَیْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّنْ سِجِّیْلٍﭤ(74)

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay. (74)

اِنَّ فِیْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰیٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِیْنَ(75)

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern. (75)

وَ اِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِیْلٍ مُّقِیْمٍ(76)

And indeed, their [ruined] city is on a main road [still] visible. (76)

اِنَّ فِیْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰیَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَﭤ(77)

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers. (77)

وَ اِنْ كَانَ اَصْحٰبُ الْاَیْكَةِ لَظٰلِمِیْنَ(78)

And the companions of the thicket were wrongdoers. (78)

فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْۘ-وَ اِنَّهُمَا لَبِاِمَامٍ مُّبِیْنٍﭤ(79)

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway. (79)

وَ لَقَدْ كَذَّبَ اَصْحٰبُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِیْنَ(80)

And the companions of al-Hijr had denied the messengers. (80)

وَ اٰتَیْنٰهُمْ اٰیٰتِنَا فَكَانُوْا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِیْنَ(81)

And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away. (81)

وَ كَانُوْا یَنْحِتُوْنَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُیُوْتًا اٰمِنِیْنَ(82)

And they used to carve out of the mountains houses, feeling secure. (82)

فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّیْحَةُ مُصْبِحِیْنَ(83)

So the shriek overtook them at morning. (83)

فَمَاۤ اَغْنٰى عَنْهُمْ مَّا كَانُوْا یَكْسِبُوْنَﭤ(84)

And there did not avail them [anything] that they used to earn. (84)

وَ مَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضَ وَ مَا بَیْنَهُمَاۤ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّؕ-وَ اِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَاٰتِیَةٌ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِیْلَ(85)

And We did not create the heavens and the earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness. (85)

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلّٰقُ الْعَلِیْمُ(86)

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator. (86)

وَ لَقَدْ اٰتَیْنٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِیْ وَ الْقُرْاٰنَ الْعَظِیْمَ(87)

And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an. (87)

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیْنَیْكَ اِلٰى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهٖۤ اَزْوَاجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَ لَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَیْهِمْ وَ اخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ(88)

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [in kindness] to the believers. (88)

وَ قُلْ اِنِّیْۤ اَنَا النَّذِیْرُ الْمُبِیْنُ(89)

And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner," (89)

كَمَاۤ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِیْنَ(90)

Just as We sent down [revelation] to the dividers, (90)

الَّذِیْنَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْاٰنَ عِضِیْنَ(91)

Who made the Qur'an into portions. (91)

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْــٴَـلَنَّهُمْ اَجْمَعِیْنَ(92)

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all (92)

عَمَّا كَانُوْا یَعْمَلُوْنَ(93)

About what they used to do. (93)

فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَ اَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِیْنَ(94)

Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists. (94)

اِنَّا كَفَیْنٰكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِءِیْنَ(95)

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers (95)

الَّذِیْنَ یَجْعَلُوْنَ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَۚ-فَسَوْفَ یَعْلَمُوْنَ(96)

Who make [as equal] with Allah another deity. But they will soon know. (96)

وَ لَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ یَضِیْقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا یَقُوْلُوْنَ(97)

And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. (97)

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَ كُنْ مِّنَ السّٰجِدِیْنَ(98)

So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]. (98)

وَ اعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتّٰى یَاْتِیَكَ الْیَقِیْنُ(99)

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death]. (99)
