Surah Al Lail With English Translations

وَ الَّیْلِ اِذَا یَغْشٰى(1)

By the night when it covers (1)

وَ النَّهَارِ اِذَا تَجَلّٰى(2)

And [by] the day when it appears (2)

وَ مَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَ الْاُنْثٰۤى(3)

And [by] He who created the male and the female, (3)

اِنَّ سَعْیَكُمْ لَشَتّٰىﭤ(4)

Indeed, your efforts are diverse. (4)

فَاَمَّا مَنْ اَعْطٰى وَ اتَّقٰى(5)

As for one who gives and fears [Allah] (5)

وَ صَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنٰى(6)

And believes in the best [reward], (6)

فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْیُسْرٰىﭤ(7)

We will facilitate for him the way to ease. (7)

وَ اَمَّا مَنْۢ بَخِلَ وَ اسْتَغْنٰى(8)

But as for one who withholds and considers himself free of need (8)

وَ كَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنٰى(9)

And denies the best [reward], (9)

فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْعُسْرٰىﭤ(10)

We will facilitate for him the way to difficulty. (10)

وَ مَا یُغْنِیْ عَنْهُ مَالُهٗۤ اِذَا تَرَدّٰىﭤ(11)

And what will his wealth avail him when he falls [into Hellfire]? (11)

اِنَّ عَلَیْنَا لَلْهُدٰى(12)

Indeed, [it is] upon Us to show guidance. (12)

وَ اِنَّ لَنَا لَلْاٰخِرَةَ وَ الْاُوْلٰى(13)

And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (13)

فَاَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظّٰى(14)

So I have warned you of a Fire which blazes. (14)

لَا یَصْلٰىهَاۤ اِلَّا الْاَشْقَى(15)

None will [enter and] burn in it except the most wretched one (15)

الَّذِیْ كَذَّبَ وَ تَوَلّٰىﭤ(16)

Who denies and turns away. (16)

وَ سَیُجَنَّبُهَا الْاَتْقَى(17)

But the righteous one will avoid it - (17)

الَّذِیْ یُؤْتِیْ مَالَهٗ یَتَزَكّٰى(18)

He who gives his wealth to purify himself (18)

وَ مَا لِاَحَدٍ عِنْدَهٗ مِنْ نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزٰۤى(19)

And not for anyone has he [done favors for which] a reward is expected - (19)

اِلَّا ابْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْاَعْلٰى(20)

But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, the Most High. (20)

وَ لَسَوْفَ یَرْضٰى(21)

And he is going to be satisfied. (21)
