O believers! Do not take My enemies and yours as allies—showing them affection—even though they have rejected the truth you have received. They drove the Messenger and yourselves out ˹of Mecca˺ simply because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you ˹really˺ emigrated to strive in My cause and seek My pleasure, ˹then do not take them as allies,˺ secretly showing them affection—while I fully know whatever you conceal and whatever you reveal. And whoever of you does this has certainly strayed from the Right Way. (1)
If they ever gain dominance over you, they will ˹still˺ be your enemies. They will stretch out their hands and tongues to harm you, and they will wish you would abandon faith. (2)
Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you ˹at all˺ on the Day of Judgment. ˹For˺ He will judge between you ˹all˺. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do. (3)
You already have an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “We totally dissociate ourselves from you and ˹false gods˺ you worship besides Allah. We reject you. The enmity and hatred that has arisen between us and you will last until you believe in Allah alone.” ˹However,˺ Abraham’s plea for his father’s forgiveness was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to Abraham that his father was an enemy of Allah, he ˹no longer˺ associated with him. Indeed, Abraham was tender-hearted and forbearing. (4)
˹They prayed,˺ “Our Lord! Do not make us ˹a test˺ for the disbelievers, and forgive us. Our Lord! You are indeed the Almighty, All-Wise.” (5)
Indeed, in them is a good example for those who look forward to Allah and the Last Day. But whoever turns away, then ˹let them know that˺ Allah is truly the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy. (6)
Perhaps Allah will bring about affection between you and those of them you ˹now˺ hold as enemies. And Allah is All-Powerful. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (7)
Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. (8)
Allah only forbids you from befriending those who have fought you for ˹your˺ faith, driven you out of your homes, or supported ˹others˺ in doing so. And whoever takes them as friends, then it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers. (9)
O believers! When believing women come to you as emigrants, test their faith—though Allah ˹alone˺ knows best about their belief. If you find them to be faithful, then do not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful ˹wives˺ for the disbelievers, nor are the disbelievers lawful ˹husbands˺ for them. ˹But˺ repay the disbelievers whatever ˹dowries˺ they had spent. And there is no blame on you if you marry these ˹women˺, provided you pay them their dowries. And do not hold on to marriage with disbelieving women. Demand ˹repayment of˺ whatever ˹dowries˺ you had paid, and let the disbelievers do the same. That is the judgment of Allah—He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (10)
And if any of your wives desert you to the disbelievers, and you decide to retaliate, then pay ˹those whose wives have gone˺ the equivalent of whatever ˹dowries˺ they had spent. And fear Allah, in Whom you believe. (11)
O Prophet! When the believing women come to you, pledging to you that they will neither associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor fornicate, nor kill their children, nor slander anyone, nor disobey you in what is right, then accept their pledge and ask Allah’s forgiveness for them. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (12)
O believers! Do not take as allies those with whom Allah is angry—they have lost all hope in the Hereafter—just as the disbelievers have lost all hope in ˹the residents of˺ the graves. (13)
