Surah An Najm With English Translations

وَ ٱلنَّجْمِ اِذَا هَوٰى (1)

By the star when it descends, (1)

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَ مَا غَوٰى (2)

Your companion [Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, (2)

وَ مَا یَنْطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوٰىٓ (3)

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3)

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا وَحْیٌ یُّوْحٰى (4)

It is not but a وحي [revelation] revealed, (4)

عَلَّمَهٗ شَدِیْدُ ٱلْقُوٰى (5)

Taught to him by one intense in strength - (5)

ذُوْ مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوٰى (6)

One of sound intellect. And he rose to [his] true form (6)

وَّ هُوَ بِٱلْاُفُقِ ٱلْاَعْلٰى (7)

While he was in the higher horizon. (7)

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلّٰى (8)

Then he approached and came down (8)

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَیْنِ اَوْ اَدْنٰى (9)

And was at a distance of two bows' length or nearer. (9)

فَاَوْحٰۤى اِلٰىٰ عَبْدِهٖ مَآ اَوْحٰى (10)

And he revealed to His servant what he revealed. (10)

مَّا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَاٰىٓ (11)

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. (11)

اَفَتُمٰرُوْنَهٗ عَلٰىٰ مَا یَرٰى (12)

So will you dispute with him over what he saw? (12)

وَ لَقَدْ رَاٰهُ نَزْلَةً اُخْرٰىٰ (13)

And he certainly saw him in another descent (13)

عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنْتَهٰى (14)

At the سدرة المنتهىٰ [lote-tree of the utmost boundary] - (14)

عِنْدَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَاْوٰىٓ (15)

Near it is the garden of refuge [Paradise] - (15)

اِذْ یَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا یَغْشٰى (16)

When there covered the lote-tree that which covered [it]. (16)

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَ مَا طَغٰى (17)

The sight [of Muḥammad] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. (17)

لَقَدْ رَاٰى مِنْ اٰیٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرٰىٓ (18)

He has certainly seen of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18)

اَفَرَءَیْتُمُ ٱللّٰتَ وَ ٱلْعُزّٰى (19)

So have you considered al-Lāt and al-'Uzzá? (19)

وَ مَنٰوةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْاُخْرٰىٓ (20)

And Manāt, the third - the other one? (20)

اَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَ لَهُ ٱلْاُنْثٰىٓ (21)

Is it for you the male, and for Him the female? (21)

تِلْكَ اِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِیْزٰىٓ (22)

That, then, is a division most unjust. (22)

اِنْ هِیَ اِلَّآ اَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّیْتُمُوْهَاۤ اَنْتُمْ وَ اٰبَآؤُكُمْ مَّآ اَنْزَلَ ٱللّٰهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطٰنٍ اِنْ یَّتَّبِعُوْنَ اِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَ مَا تَهْوَى ٱلْاَنْفُسُ وَ لَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ مِّنْ رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدٰىٓ (23)

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. (23)

اَمْ لِّلْاِنْسٰنِ مَا تَمَنّٰى (24)

Or is it for man whatever he desires? (24)

فَلِلّٰهِ ٱلْاٰخِرَةُ وَ ٱلْاُوْلٰى (25)

Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (25)

وَ كَمْ مِّنْ مَّلَكٍ فِی ٱلسَّمٰوٰتِ لَا تُغْنِیْ شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَیْــٴًـا اِلَّا مِنْۢ بَعْدِ اَنْ یَّاْذَنَ ٱللّٰهُ لِمَنْ یَّشَآءُ وَ یَرْضٰى (26)

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail anything except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves. (26)

اِنَّ ٱلَّذِیْنَ لَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِٱلْاٰخِرَةِ لَیُسَمُّوْنَ ٱلْمَلٰٓىٕكَةَ تَسْمِیَةَ ٱلْاُنْثٰى (27)

Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names, (27)

وَ مَا لَهُمْ بِهٖ مِنْ عِلْمٍ اِنْ یَّتَّبِعُوْنَ اِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَ اِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغْنِیْ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَیْــٴًـا (28)

And they have no knowledge of it. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all. (28)

فَاَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَّنْ تَوَلّٰىٰ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَ لَمْ یُرِدْ اِلَّا ٱلْحَیٰوةَ ٱلدُّنْیَا (29)

So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life. (29)

ذٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِیْلِهٖ وَ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدٰى (30)

That is the extent of their knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided. (30)

وَ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمٰوٰتِ وَ مَا فِی ٱلْاَرْضِ لِیَجْزِیَ ٱلَّذِیْنَ اَسَآءُوْا بِمَا عَمِلُوْا وَ یَجْزِیَ ٱلَّذِیْنَ اَحْسَنُوْا بِٱلْحُسْنٰى (31)

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with what is best. (31)

ٱلَّذِیْنَ یَجْتَنِبُوْنَ كَبٰٓىٕرَ ٱلْاِثْمِ وَ ٱلْفَوَاحِشَ اِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ وٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ اِذْ اَنْشَاَكُمْ مِّنَ ٱلْاَرْضِ وَ اِذْ اَنْتُمْ اَجِنَّةٌ فِیْ بُطُوْنِ اُمَّهٰتِكُمْ فَلَا تُزَكُّوْۤا اَنْفُسَكُمْ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقٰىٓ (32)

Those who avoid great sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him. (32)

اَفَرَءَیْتَ ٱلَّذِیْ تَوَلّٰى (33)

Have you seen the one who turned away (33)

وَّ اَعْطٰى قَلِیْلًا وَّ اَكْدٰىٓ (34)

And gave a little and [then] withheld? (34)

اَعِنْدَهٗ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَیْبِ فَهُوَ یَرٰىٓ (35)

Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees? (35)

اَمْ لَمْ یُنَبَّاْ بِمَا فِیْ صُحُفِ مُوْسٰى (36)

Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses (36)

وَّ اِبْرٰهِیْمَ الَّذِیْ وَفّٰۤى (37)

And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] - (37)

اَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزْرَ اُخْرٰى (38)

That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another (38)

وَّ اَنْ لَّیْسَ لِلْاِنْسَانِ اِلَّا مَا سَعٰى (39)

And that there is not for man except [the result of] what he strives for (39)

وَّ اَنَّ سَعْیَهٗ سَوْفَ یُرٰى (40)

And that his effort will be seen (40)

ثُمَّ یُجْزٰىهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْاَوْفٰى (41)

Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense (41)

وَّ اَنَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنْتَهٰى (42)

And that to your Lord is the finality (42)

وَّ اَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَضْحَكَ وَ اَبْكٰى (43)

And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep (43)

وَّ اَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَمَاتَ وَ اَحْیَا (44)

And that it is He who causes death and gives life (44)

وَّ اَنَّهٗ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَیْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَ ٱلْاُنْثٰى (45)

And that He created the two mates, the male and the female, (45)

مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍ اِذَا تُمْنٰى (46)

From a sperm-drop when it is emitted (46)

وَّ اَنَّ عَلَیْهِ ٱلنَّشْاَةَ ٱلْاُخْرٰى (47)

And that upon Him is the next creation (47)

وَّ اَنَّهٗ هُوَ اَغْنٰى وَ اَقْنٰى (48)

And that it is He who enriches and suffices (48)

وَّ اَنَّهٗ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرٰى (49)

And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius (49)

وَّ اَنَّهٗۤ اَهْلَكَ عَادَاﰳ ٱلْاُوْلٰى (50)

And that He destroyed the first 'Aad (50)

وَّ ثَمُوْدَاۡ فَمَآ اَبْقٰى (51)

And Thamud - and He did not spare [any of them] (51)

وَّ قَوْمَ نُوْحٍ مِّنْ قَبْلُ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا هُمْ اَظْلَمَ وَ اَطْغٰى (52)

And the people of Noah before [them] - indeed, they were most unjust and transgressing. (52)

وَ ٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ اَهْوٰى (53)

And the overturned cities He threw down (53)

فَغَشّٰىهَا مَا غَشّٰى (54)

So there covered them that which covered [them]. (54)

فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارٰى (55)

Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt? (55)

هٰذَا نَذِیْرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْاُوْلٰىٓ (56)

This [Prophet Muhammad] is a warner like the former warners. (56)

اَزِفَتِ ٱلْاٰزِفَةُ (57)

The approacher [i.e., the Hour] has approached. (57)

لَیْسَ لَهَا مِنْ دُوْنِ ٱللّٰهِ كَاشِفَةٌ (58)

There is not for it besides Allah any remover. (58)

اَفَمِنْ هٰذَا ٱلْحَدِیْثِ تَعْجَبُوْنَ (59)

Then at this statement do you wonder? (59)

وَ تَضْحَكُوْنَ وَ لَا تَبْكُوْنَ (60)

And you laugh and do not weep? (60)

وَّ اَنْتُمْ سٰمِدُوْنَ (61)

While you are غافلون [heedless]? (61)

فَٱسْجُدُوْا لِلّٰهِ وَ ٱعْبُدُوْا (62)

So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]. (62)
