Marriage (Nikah) is one of the most beautiful and important Sunnahs in Islam. It is rather a legal agreement as well as a spiritual union of a man and a woman. Islam also instructs us to convert all of our actions in life into a kind of worship, and marriage is one of them. Making dua for nikah is one of the effective means of inviting the blessings of Allah into your marriage.
The Duas are:
Dua Before the Nikah Ceremony
Translation:
Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khairin faqir.
English Translation:
“My Lord, truly I need whatever good You send down to me.”
— (Surah Al-Qasas 28:24)
This dua was made by Prophet Musa (AS) before Allah granted him a spouse. It’s a beautiful dua for those seeking a righteous partner.
Dua During the Nikah Ceremony
Although there is no fixed dua for the actual nikah, it is Sunnah to say the Khutbah al-Haajah, which includes:
(This is a longer sermon recited by the one performing the nikah. It praises Allah, affirms faith, and reminds the couple of Taqwa.)
This sermon is a reminder of Allah’s presence in the marriage contract and encourages the couple to begin their life on a path of righteousness.
Dua After Nikah – For a Happy Marriage
Translation:
“Baarakallahu laka, wa baaraka ‘alayka, wa jama’a baynakumaa fee khayr.”
English Translation:
“May Allah bless you, shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.”
This is a Sunnah dua that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite when someone got married. It is recommended to say this to the couple after their nikah.
What is Nikah in Islam?
The Islamic marriage contract is called nikah. It is a religious contract between a man and a woman, in the presence of witnesses and a wali (guardian) to the bride. Nikah in Islam is not just simply love and companionship; responsibility, respect, and understanding have to be present.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Marriage is part of my Sunnah, and whoever does not follow my Sunnah has nothing to do with me.”
— (Sunan Ibn Majah)
This Hadith shows that marriage is a highly recommended act in Islam.
Why Make Dua for Nikah?
Along with numerous blessings, marriage is accompanied by trials and duties. Nikah dua brings the assistance, protection, love, and guidance of Allah to your relationship. It not only improves your relationship with your spouse, but also with your Creator.
If you are getting ready to marry, you are a nikah, or you are currently married, these duas are a lovely method to request Allah to provide barakah (blessing), comprehension, and joy.
Other Duas to Strengthen Your Marriage
Here are some other powerful supplications to build love and understanding between spouses:
1. Dua for Love and Mercy:
Translation:
“Waja’ala baynakum mawaddatan wa rahmah.”
English Translation:
“And He placed between you affection and mercy.” — (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)
This verse reminds couples of the true nature of Islamic marriage: built on love and mercy.
2. Dua for Peace in Marriage:
Translation:
“Rabbana hablana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin.”
English Translation:
“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes…” — (Surah Al-Furqan 25:74)
This dua asks Allah to make your spouse and children a source of happiness and peace.
Conclusion:
Marriage is a path of love, belief, and companionship. When you start this process and make a dua for nikah, you are essentially asking Allah to guide and bless this marriage. You could be getting married soon, or you could be in a relationship, but you should never stop making dua. It is soothing, makes the relationship stronger, and makes you remember that Allah is always by your side.
Therefore, continue praying and be patient and hope that Allah will bless your marriage and make it full of mercy, love, and barakah.
